Common Installation Problems

This is just a placeholder. Each of these topics will have to be dealt with in some detail. Perhaps it should be its own section?

And the top 20 mistakes people make when first installing are...

  1. It says Syntax error in line 1. I've looked at line 1 and it looks like this.... (DL in binary mode or use current kernel)
  2. G3 desktop machines: Bad Signature (new kernel)
  3. G3 MiniTower UW Woes (LinuxPPC)
  4. PowerBook G3 -- where's my drive? (new kernel)
  5. PowerMac 7600/120 -- where's my drive? (change ID of internal drive to 1 or adjust drive letters down)
  6. I tried to mount swap and it said invalid argument (don't mount swap)
  7. It crashes with complaints about write errors.... (need a bigger partition)
  8. Why does everything freeze when I format my partitions? (>2 Gigs or UW woes)
  9. My new G3 desktop CD-ROM won't work (IDE Zip issue)
  10. My computer keeps saying Comps file is not version 0 as expected (Binary DL)
  11. None of the RPMs will install... they keep saying they can't execute the script (binary DL)
  12. I got it installed... [but it crashed when setting up timezones].
  13. Now it won't let me log in, saying password invalid (root fs too small, probably, but fix by booting single-user)
  14. Will MkLinux work on * system?
  15. I have two CD-ROM drives. The installer boots from one, but expects the CD to be in the other....
  16. My machine keeps crashing with tx_intr: unable to dequeue mbuf (remove tulip card during install... need better answer)
  17. My G3 MiniTower won't install using the ethernet card.... (use motherboard ethernet)
  18. I can't get my external SCSI drive to work on my PowerBook 1400 or 5300. (Sorry, no support yet.)
  19. How do I do a network install on a PB1400/PB5300? (Sorry, no support yet.)
  20. How do I do a CD install on a PB1400? (Current kernel, add the pb1400_expbay flag. If that doesn't work, install of the HD).
  21. My machine keeps complaining about media errors (recovered or otherwise). (A: check the CD-ROM and/or hard drive, depending on the target number. Also, don't install on Zip or Jaz carts.)
  22. I've been working with DR2.1, and i tried to install DR3, but it keeps failing to find bootstrap.conf. I've checked the partition number in pdisk, but to no avail. (Upgrade pdisk to current naming convention.)
I'm sure there are others that should be added, but those are the only ones I could think of at the moment. Anyone else?
